Your refund check couldn't be delivered, so the money went back on your account.
What code 740 means
Code 740 means a paper refund check came back undeliverable and was put back on your account. The account is frozen from refunding, and the IRS issues notice CP 31 about the undelivered check.
The freeze is released when your address is updated: an address update (code 018) releases all 740 freezes on the account, and the refund can then be reissued.
What to do
- Update your address with the IRS, for example with Form 8822, so the refund can be sent again.
