IRS transcript decoder

Paste the transactions from your IRS account transcript to see what each code means. It runs in your browser: nothing you paste is sent or saved.

Copy the transactions section, the lines that start with a three-digit code. You can also type the codes you see, like 570 971.

How to use it

  1. Open your account transcript for the year in your IRS online account, or with Get Transcript on IRS.gov.
  2. Select the transactions, the lines with a code, explanation, date and amount, and copy them.
  3. Paste them above and select Decode. Each code links to a full explanation with its IRS source.

On a transcript, a minus sign means a credit. Cycle codes, the 8-digit numbers like 20261505 on some lines, are decoded into the posting week and day. See all IRS transcript codes or use the cycle code decoder.

Questions

Is it safe to paste my transcript here?

The decoder runs entirely in your browser. What you paste isn't uploaded, sent or saved; it's gone when you leave the page. It only needs the lines that start with a code, so you can leave out your name, address and other personal details.

What if a code isn't explained?

We explain the 39 codes individual taxpayers see most. Every code is defined in the IRS's Document 6209, Section 8A, which the decoder links to.

Can the decoder tell me when I'll get my refund?

No. It explains what each code means. For refund status, use Where's My Refund? or your IRS online account.
