IRS code 570: Additional account action pending (refund hold)
- Effect:
- Holds refunds
The IRS put a hold on the account, so any refund waits until the hold is released.
What code 570 means
Code 570 means the IRS has flagged a possible additional liability or is holding a credit on the account. It sets the -R freeze, which stops the account from refunding or moving credit out.
Document 6209 lists many ways a 570 gets set. Among them: a return that posted with a review flag, a payment that created a credit while an exam indicator (420 or 424) is open, and credits input with a hold. The IRS's Return Integrity Verification Operations, which checks returns with questionable wage or withholding claims, also uses this freeze.
A 570 on its own is a hold, not an audit or a bill. It means something on the account is being checked before money moves.
It's released by code 571. A tax adjustment can also release it: Document 6209 lists the 570 hold among the freezes that code 290 releases, and the IRS uses a 290 for $0.00 when no tax change is needed.
What to do
- Watch your mail and your IRS online account. If the IRS needs something from you, it sends a notice, and the transcript may show code 971, Notice issued.
- If you get a notice, follow its instructions. The review can't finish without what it asks for.

Questions about code 570
How long does a 570 hold last?
There's no set time. The hold stays until the IRS finishes its review and posts a 571 or an adjustment that releases it. For holds from the IRS's return integrity review, the IRS manual tells phone assistors that once the release posts (a 290 for $0.00, a 571, or a 972 with action code 134) and nothing else holds the refund, it should arrive in four to six weeks.
Does code 570 mean I'm being audited?
Not on its own. A 570 is a hold. Examinations are marked with code 420 or 424.
What do codes 570 and 971 together mean?
The 570 is a hold on the account. If the 971 line says Notice issued, the IRS sent you a notice around that date. The notice, not the transcript, tells you what it's about and whether you need to do anything.
