IRS code 810: Refund freeze
- Effect:
- Holds refunds
The IRS froze the account from issuing refunds or applying credits.
What code 810 means
Code 810 freezes the account from refunds, offsets and credit elect (applying an overpayment to next year's estimated tax).
IRS compliance staff or its Return Integrity and Compliance Services place it, with a code for the reason. Document 6209's examples include pre-filing notification, abusive tax shelter detection, earned income credit checks and the Frivolous Return Program.
The IRS manual tells its customer service staff they can't resolve an 810 themselves. The IRS area that placed it releases it, with code 811.
